Being Lady Captain of a golf club is an honour and a privilege.
No matter which club you belong to, how large your ladies' section is or how long you've been a member, taking time out of your normal life to dedicate yourself to your golf club is something really special.
It's a role that comes with plenty of responsibility, but it also comes with some wonderful opportunities: meeting people, creating memories, supporting your fellow members and, of course, enjoying plenty of golf along the way!
If you're about to start your year, or wondering whether to do a second one, this is for you.
How long does a Lady Captain serve? One year… or maybe more?
Most Lady Captains serve for a year, and you'll often hear people say that one year is plenty.
And, in many ways, they're right.
A year gives someone the opportunity to take on the role, bring their own ideas to the table and make their mark. It also means that other ladies get the chance to step forward, experience the role for themselves and bring a fresh perspective to the section.
But what happens when you don't have a long list of people waiting to take over?
If your club isn't lucky enough to have an influx of new lady members or a queue of potential Captains, there's absolutely nothing wrong with doing it again.
The important thing is not to put too much pressure on yourself.
You don't have to beat the year before
I've been there myself. I've always said I wouldn't want to do it again for a long time.
I put my heart into my year as Lady Captain. I wanted to make it special, support the ladies in our section and create a year that everyone would remember.
When it was over, I wondered how I could ever do it again.
How could I possibly top what I'd already done?
But perhaps that's the wrong way to look at it.
Being Captain isn't about trying to beat the previous year. It isn't about making every event bigger, better or more impressive than the one before.
It's about keeping your section going.
It's about making sure your members are enjoying themselves, turning up, getting involved and, most importantly, coming back.
If you've achieved that, then you've done your job.
It's about the ladies around you
One of the best things about being Lady Captain is the opportunity to make a difference to the women around you.
Golf clubs can be busy places, and ladies' sections can sometimes rely on a small number of people to keep everything running.
Taking on the Captaincy can help spread that responsibility and take some of the pressure off the other ladies in your section.
You don't have to organise the biggest events. You don't have to come up with a completely new idea every month. And you certainly don't have to spend a fortune trying to make your year memorable.
Sometimes, the simplest things are the ones people remember.
-
A good day on the course.
-
A laugh after a competition.
-
A team event.
-
A new friendship.
-
A room full of ladies enjoying themselves.
That's what makes a successful Captain's year.
And then there's the cost of being Lady Captain…
Every golf club is different.
Traditions vary enormously, particularly when it comes to competitions, prizes, Captain's events and the expectations surrounding the role.
And while some clubs may have generous traditions in place, others can leave the Captain feeling that there is an expectation to contribute financially to make the year special.
That can be a difficult pressure to carry.
Being Lady Captain is already a commitment of your time and energy. The last thing you should feel is that you need to stretch your finances to prove that you're doing a good job.
Nobody hands out a trophy for overspending.
At Swing Out Sister Golf, we understand that pressure.
We know that being Lady Captain should be about celebrating your ladies, creating memories and enjoying your year, not worrying about how much everything is costing.
Make it your year
Whether you're stepping into the role for the first time, taking it on again, or simply supporting your current Lady Captain, remember that there is no perfect way to do it.
Every club is different.
Every ladies' section is different.
And every Captain will bring something different to the role.
So don't put unnecessary pressure on yourself to make your year bigger or better than anyone else's.
Make it yours.
If your ladies are smiling, enjoying their golf, supporting one another and looking forward to coming back to the club, then you're already doing something right.
And perhaps that's the real measure of a successful Lady Captain.
